Environmental Science topics are made interesting through hands-on-activities in Early Years. At Gamadia Girls’ High School, we arranged for a one day Live Fruits and Vegetable Market for Nursery to Std 4 pupils on Friday, December 16, 2022. Real Fruits and Vegetable vendors were invited to sell their green groceries.
This activity focused on the following:
Pre- Primary Department – Recognition of different fruits and vegetables and Colours associated with them.
Stds 1 and 2 – Healthy Eating
Std 3 and 4 – Understanding Commercial concepts such as buying, selling, handling cash by applying mathematical skills.
Children had a fun filled experience of buying (Nursery under the guidance of their parents and teachers) vegetables and fruits from the vendors. They were excited to shop for the veggies and fruits of their choice. The enriching experience gave the students an opportunity to showcase not only their proficiency in handling money but also to display their marketing skills.
It created an awareness about the importance and consumption of fruits and vegetables in regular diet. This occasion was used to reinforce the concept of the health benefits of fruits and vegetables. The tiny tots also learned more about the taste, smell, colour and texture of each fruit and vegetable. Children understood the importance of washing the fruits before eating or cooking and about the benefits of eating fresh fruits.
